Frequently asked questions

Is there an age limit?

This event is ideally aimed at students who are 16 years and above. We welcome those slightly younger (14 or 15) but we are not able to offer them any shadowing opportunities with our teams after the open evening due to age restrictions on work experience in hospitals.

Is there any parking at the hospital?

Yes there is paid parking in the LRI multi storey car park. See UHL website for car parking charges.

Can I bring a parent/guardian?

Yes you can but they will need to book a ticket for themselves if they wish to participate as we have limited spaces. If they are just dropping you off, they can wait in the Physiotherapy reception area and will not need a ticket.

Can we get any refreshments on site?

We will not be providing refreshments on the night so please bring drinks etc with you but we do have a restaurant on site and a WH Smith shop that is open until 8PM. There are also vending machines. We have a water fountain in the therapy department.

What can I expect to learn on the Open Evening?

We will be starting with a presentation about both professions, which will be about an hour long. After a short break, we will be getting you to engage with some interactive stations that will showcase some of our therapy skills. We will then discuss your next steps towards a career in therapy.

I can't make this one - will there be other events in the future?

Yes we are planning other events this year. Eventbrite keeps a waiting list for us so make sure you add your details. Dates are not confirmed yet - we will contact you with future dates.

Are there any resources I can look at about the professions?

Yes, you can access find lots of information about the professions on various websites: Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (www.csp.org.uk), Royal College of Occupational Therapists (www.rcot.co.uk) or the Health and Care Professions Council (www.hcpc-uk.org).

What should I wear?

You will want to be comfortable so you can wear school uniform or plain joggers/plain trainers/plain top etc. We would prefer you not to wear jeans, crop tops, open toed shoes, heels etc as you need to be comfortable but safe and there may be a practical element to the evening.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Feel free to bring a notebook or device you can write notes on. Photography/videoing is not allowed due to it being a hospital. Bring a water bottle/drink with you.

Who can I contact if I have more questions before I commit to a ticket?

You can email the organisers at uhl-tr.therapypracticelearning@nhs.net

Do I need to be there at 5:30pm?

Yes as we have a full programme of activities throughout the evening. If you want to attend but know you may not make it for 5:30pm, please email the organisers at uhl-tr.therapypracticelearning.nhs.net to inform them, as it may influence which group you are put in to.

I am a qualified therapist looking for NHS experience - is this event suitable for me?

This experience is designed for those wishing to find out about Therapy as a career. If you are already qualified, it is unlikely you will benefit from this as we are targeting those applying to University. Please email uhl-tr.therapypracticelearning@nhs.net if you need something different.

Is this a drop in event or do I need to be there from the start?

No it isn't a drop in event. We have a programme of activities so you will need to be there at the stated start time. If you are not able to attend at 5:30pm, please email uhl-tr.therapypracticelearning@nhs.net as we may need to consider which group we assign you to.
