About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 30 minutes

Yvonne Lyon and Boo Hewerdine’s new collaboration, Things Found In Books, is an album of songs written in response to a notice board in Culzean Castle’s second-hand bookshop, adorned with things that have dropped out of books

Notes, photographs, old receipts, letters, postcards and fragments of people’s lives had been lovingly collected and kept on the board on the wall among the bookshelves.

Forming an inimitable songwriting partnership, Yvonne and Boo have woven these ephemeral stories with their own, creating an album full of nostalgia and beauty, hope and longing.

Yvonne Lyon is among the UK’s brightest and best singer/songwriters. Her most recent album Growing Wild is her tenth solo studio release, further demonstrating her ability to deliver engaging original material with fresh imagination. Yvonne consistently combines poignant lyrics with strong, creative melodies demonstrating a voice that can be both fragile and intense.

Having supported Eddi Reader throughout the UK, performed with Beth Nielsen Chapman and co-written with Boo Hewerdine, Yvonne continues to establish herself as an artist of considerable significance. She has also shared a stage with Patti Griffin, Karine Polwart, Karen Matheson, Luka Bloom, Steve Forbert, Juliet Turner.

‘just stunning music’ Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2

Boo Hewerdine is one of the greatest singer-songwriters in the business and a unique talent. In addition to his own career from legendary band ‘The Bible’ onwards, songwriter, performer and producer Boo is maybe most regularly associated with Eddi Reader. Together they enjoyed international success with the Hewerdine-penned hit single ‘Patience of Angels’ in 1995, with Boo also producing Reader’s …Sings the Songs of Robert Burns in 2003 - an album now viewed as a folk classic.

Boo’s career has included performing – either solo or in bands; writing material for major artists such as Sia, K.D Lang, Kris Drever (Lau), Duke Special, David McAlmont, and Eddi Reader; being produced by Steve Earle; and touring with Richard Thompson to name but a few highlights. But it is perhaps going right back to his early ambition that gives us the best clues as to his motivation as a songwriter.

“All I ever wanted was my name in the brackets. And it gave me this life”.

Become part of the story! When you come to Things Found In Books, Yvonne and Boo invite you to bring along your own ‘things found in books’ - those forgotten treasures tucked between pages: photos, notes, letters, tickets, drawings… anything that tells a story. These objects may be shared during the show or simply placed on our touring ‘story table’ to become part of the atmosphere. It’s a beautiful way to connect personal histories with this moving performance. Do Please Bring Your Own Drinks as well!
