Event description
Proposals, dispelling some fears, offering some approaches.

About this Event

This isn’t a how to, more of a what, why and where. Proposal is a word that comes loaded with preconception and fear for many artists, leaving us head in hands ‘What do they want from me?’.

Let’s go back to the start, proposals don’t just serve to seek funding, or a place to exhibit, but should perhaps be viewed as a place to gather ideas, understand research and explore the desired outcome. This work can then go into the funding, commissioning, and gallery approaches, helping you find the place that fits your work, rather than bending and twisting your work to conform to existing requirements, although compromise isn’t always a bad thing.

Joining us will be Gabrielle de la Puente and Zarina Muhammad who come together under the collaborative identity of The White Pube who have challenged the art world status quo and launched The Funding Library, a free resource to assist in successful funding applications. Shaun Badham, a member of the a-n Council, founder of The Bas Art Index and primarily an artist. Shaun has thoughtfully explored the purpose of proposal, both practically and personally, understanding the often necessity but also protective of the unpaid labour and the reality of ‘success’ and ‘failure’. Finally, we welcome Mary Cork, over 15 years of experience developing, curating and delivering in both the commercial and public sectors and cofounder of ZELDA a holistic arts advisory service. Mary has seen many a proposal as well as assisted in the writing with others and the development of their own.
