Event description

Description

The session will involve a presentation of a research paper that has inspired academic staff and our research in many different ways. The aim of these sessions is to make academic material more accessible, by showing how we engage with the academic work of others. The way in which we each engage with scholarly work will be very different, so each session will be unique in its style and approach.

Dr Cara Reed will be presenting the following paper.

"Crafting Selves: Power, Gender, and Discourses of Identity in a Japanese Workplace" by Dorinne K. Kondo.

The book is based on an ethnography Kondo did in Japan exploring factory work in a family-owned company in Tokyo. Her focus was on the construction of self, providing a view of identities as multiple, gendered, and crafted in contexts of power. I will be picking out key chapters/elements of the book and discussing how it helped Cara in her PhD research. There is online access to the book through ifind if anyone wants to have a look at in advance and if they are interested, the chapter I’d recommend is Chapter 3: Disciplined Selves.
