Event description

Description

The Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers present a seminar discussion and documentary film screening on the daily life and experiences of refugees in Greece.

Whilst the refugee crisis is no longer front page news, many refugees and migrants continue to arrive in Greece seeking protection and assistance.

During this evening, we will hear from Theodoris Zeis, a Greek Lawyer who will share his experience working at a grassroots level with refugees in mainland Greece.

Folloing his talk, there will be a film screening of 'Inadmissable', a documentary film discovering the daily life of refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos, exploring the legal and human consequences of the migration agreement between Turkey and Greece.

'Inadmissable'

In October 2016, Thraedable went to Lesbos to launch its partnership with the Legal Centre Lesbos – an organisation that provides free legal advice to refugees and migrants on the island of Lesbos. They discovered that access to correct information, at a time of great uncertainty following the EU-Turkey deal to send refugees and migrants back to Turkey, was lacking. Migrants had become stranded and stuck on the island, uncertain as to the amount of time they had to wait. Meanwhile, the authorities introduced a new criteria – the admissibility procedure – to determine whether Turkey is a safe third country for asylum seekers to be sent back to. 'Inadmissable' explores the impact of this deal, and the hopes and fears of the migrants who remain in Greece, who have largely been forgotten by the world's media.

Thraedable is a social enterprise to raise awareness and funds about little-told or misrepresented social issues. Thraedable partners with grassroots charities around the world, it holds art workshops with their beneficiaries and takes inspiration from their artistic expression to design ethical and sustainable clothes. 50% of profits are shared with the partner organisations. Thraedable also wants to inform through its online platform, articles and videos.
