What are the challenges facing LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum in the UK? Join us for a virtual reading of their first-hand accounts.

About this Event

'They separated us. We tried to say no, we applied for asylum as a couple. They say we don’t have any civil evidence that we are a couple. And we’re like, “How can we show you any civil evidence if homosexuality is forbidden in my country?"' LGBTQI+ asylum seeker, UK

'This Is Who I Am' is presented by the theatre company ice&fire, which specialises in exploring human rights stories through performance. The company puts human rights at the core of everything it does to make accessible theatre for a wide range of audiences across the UK. This virtual performance features a reading of first-hand accounts of LGBTQI+ people's experiences of seeking refuge in the UK and going through the UK asylum process. The reading will be followed by a discussion between the ice&fire theatre director Sebastian Aguirre and LGBTQI+ asylum groups in the UK. There will also be a Q&A session with the audience.

Content warning: please be aware that experiences of state, sexual and homophobic violence as well as attempted suicide will be shared in the reading. The reading is for audiences of 14+.

Registration fee: attendance is free. However, ice&fire is a small non-profit Arts charity and would be grateful for any donations to keep their work going post COVID-19. We therefore suggest a solidarity fee of £3-5, if you can. Please donate on the ice&fire JustGiving page.

A Zoom link will be sent out to attendees the day before the event. The performance will not be recorded.

This virtual reading is organised by MMB in collaboration with the Queer Muslim Asylum Project and the Queer European Asylum Network.
