Event description

Description

The third talk in the Second Air Division Memorial Library's Broken America? Governance in the Age of Division lecture series. Dr. Emma Long (UEA) will discuss the polarizing issue of the continued politicizing of the American court system:

Are American judges simply “politicians in robes” as the well-known adage would have us believe? Recent events would lead us to answer yes, whether considering the year-long battle between Congress and President Obama about the appointment of a new justice to the Supreme Court or President Trump’s criticisms of individual judges who have issued rulings with which he disagrees. This talk will trace the ways in which the American judiciary has been drawn increasingly into the political firing line, and will consider the dangerous consequences of the politicization of the judiciary, which began in earnest in the 1980s under President Reagan. It will also consider the possibility that the best resistance to this politicization might just come from the judges themselves.
