Description

Thomas Chippendale, the Greatest Cabinet Maker

With Nicholas Merchant

2018 is the tercentenary of the birth, in Otley, of Thomas Chippendale, a name surely known to everyone with the least interest in English furniture and cabinet making. There are to be exhibitions all over the country in celebration of the event.

Leaving his native county and setting up in St Martin’s Lane in London, Chippendale became renowned not only for his artistry as a cabinet-maker, but also as an entrepreneur who in 1754 produced his “The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Directory”. This was the first time a book of furniture designs had been published. It enjoyed a wide circulation amidst the cognoscenti, but also carried the designs across the Atlantic to America and was even translated into French.
