'Thomas Wolsey and the Diplomats'

Dr Sowerby explores how Cardinal Wolsey helped Henry VIII to adopt resident diplomacy and face the challenges this new, ongoing form of international relations posed and the opportunities it created.

Tracey Sowerby DPhil, FRHistS, FHEA teaches history at Keble College, Oxford. During the academic year 2016-2017 she will be a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies at the Central European University in Budapest. She has written widely on print culture and political culture, including articles on the relationship between diplomacy and gender, art and religious identity. Her first book, Renaissance and Reform in Tudor England: The Careers of Sir Richard Morison c.1513-1556 (Oxford, 2010), provided an intellectual biography of an influential humanist and evangelical. At present, she is writing two books on the cultural history of early modern diplomacy and co-editing a collection of essays on Practices of Diplomacy in the Early Modern World c.1410-1800 which will appear in 2017.
