About this event

Community • Heritage

Situated not far from Ripon, Thornborough Henges are a unique triple henge stretching over a mile from end to end. Almost hidden from view from the road, the Southern Henge of this monument is surrounded by ancient features, however as all of them have been either destroyed or damaged this complex site is challenging to understand without help. This guided tour, unlocks the secrets hidden in the landscape connecting the Neolithic features with those of the Bronze Age, including the importance of the earlier rare triple ditch barrow not far from the South Henge.

Whilst walking is on flat but uneven ground the distance to the southern henge may mean that this tour is not suitable for people who have walking difficulties or use a wheelchair, unless it is motorised. The site is exposed with no shelter and there are no toilets on site.

Meeting in the layby between the central and south henges, our volunteers will take you on a guided walk around the site to get to know the history and inspiring stories of the South Henge.

Parking: A very small amount of layby parking is available at the entrance gates to the Central and Southern Henge. What3words location: ///guards.remission.star (Grid Reference: SE 28635 79363). Please park respectfully and safely.

Access: The Central and Southern henges are accessed through gates. Footpaths around the site are relatively flat, but uneven and grassy.

Dogs: Dogs on short leads are welcome. Please ensure you clean up after them.

Please be aware: Farm livestock is likely to be present.
