The autumn episode of Threads of Change features an extraordinary artist and educator, Suba Subramaniam (currently Artistic Director of Akademi). We are intrigued by her vast journey in dance and science, where she played many roles on and off stage.
Her work with Angika and Mayuri Boonham took a contemporary approach to the Bharatanatyam form. Her work with Sadhana brought her initiatives in science and education projects in dialogue with dance. She has valuable experience in participatory projects utilising this cross-disciplinary inquiry that was the core of her practice. She has held positions such as Co-Education Director for Cape Farewell, a project that looked at how the arts can play a role in raising awareness in young people about climate change.
As creative practitioners in the early years of our practice, Venu and I (Shivani Jatar) are keen to explore and investigate myriad creative approaches, practices, and performance work in the South Asian dance sector. With Threads of Change, we are building an archive of South Asian dance in the UK. We want to speak with artists about what they created, what inspired their inquiries, and how they reached new audiences.
