Description

Would you like to attend a free education programme for Nurses and other health workers to assist in the identification and support of depression in people with long term health problems?

The three day programme will be led by Dr David Ekers, Nurse Consultant at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust and Durham University. It will introduce David's research which suggests that primary care nurses are ideally placed for delivering care to depressed patients; especially in cases were a patient also has a comorbid long-term medical condition and then share some non-pharmaceutical assessments and interventions for depression in the primary care setting.

Day One
Aims of the first day of training are to give background information and goals for training. Topics covered will be:
Mental/Physical Mulitimorbidity and implications for care
Collaborative care
Background evidence base
Components of CC for depression
Identification and measurement of depression (skills training)

Day Two
Topics to be covered on day two are:
Risk assessment
Proactive follow up and what to include (skills training)
The role of case management in collaborative care
Use of psychological self help materials in collaborative care (skills training)
Behavioural activation and the relevance to mental physical multimorbidity

Day Three
Feedback and clinical practice
Development of proactive care packages (Skills practice)
The role of supervision
Round up and evaluation

The training course is being held on Monday 13th - Tuesday 14th February, and Monday 13th March 2017. All three dates must be attended to complete the course.

About Dr David Ekers
Dr David Ekers trained as a psychiatric nurse at the Maudsley Hospital in London in 1987. He has worked in a range of inpatient, community and primary care settings in both the UK and Australia. He has been an accredited CBT therapist since 1997 and completed an MSc in research methodology at Southampton University in 2002.

He moved to the North East in 2002 to take up a role as Consultant Nurse in Primary Care Mental Health. He became the Clinical Lead for ‘Talking Changes’ IAPT service in Co Durham and Darlington in 2010. David completed his PhD in 2011 exploring the effectiveness and dissemination of Behavioural Activation for Depression. He now works is in a jointly funded post between Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust and Durham University research the effective dissemination of psychological interventions. He has contributed to a number of NICE guidelines and Department of Health advisory groups.

He was site lead and co investigator on a number of multicentre randomised controlled trials of both low and high intensity psychological interventions (COBRA, CASPER, CASPER plus) training and supervising study therapists. He is the Chief investigator of the NIHR funded Community Pharmacy Mood Intervention Study (CHEMIST).
