Event description

Description

Electrification of the UK energy system has been identified as the principal decarbonisation strategy and has been studied extensively. In contrast, hydrogen technologies and systems have only been projected to see limited uptake in some future scenarios and have not been extensively examined, in part due to anticipated higher costs and infrastructural barriers relative to some other options. But as hydrogen technology matures, the cost projections and other performance indicators have become more favourable; while in contrast, the severe technical challenges of an all-electric future are becoming apparent with increasing renewables and electric heating. Hydrogen and fuel cells have the potential to make a significant contribution to future decarbonisation in the UK, even extending to powering most vehicles, heating most homes and industries, and supporting renewable electricity generation. These disruptive technologies also offer some significant advantages for consumers, when compared with electric alternatives.

The H2FC SUPERGEN Hub has commissioned three evidence based White Papers, in addition to a previous one published in 2014 on The Role of Hydrogen in Decarbonising Heat, to inform key stakeholders, especially policy makers on:

1) The Role of Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Future Energy Systems

2) The Economic Impacts of Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the UK

3) The Role of Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in enabling Energy Security in the UK

In this session we present the key findings of the assessment undertaken to answer these questions. The assessment is developed based on our reviews of the technical, academic and commercial literature in these areas and bespoke modelling, and by engaging with core industry stakeholders.
