Event description

Description

Join Sue Clifford, renowned author of titles including ‘England in Particular’ and ‘Community Orchards’, for an insight into the work and achievements of Common Ground.

In 1983 Clifford co-founded the charity, to promote peoples interest and action in their own localities. Standing up for the ordinary and everyday (rather than the special and the rare) demanded a new way of working: Common Ground pioneered linking the arts and the everyday to liberate communities into expressing the importance of story upon history upon natural history in their place.

Painting, sculpture, music, and poetry have all played their part in projects linking nature and culture, about trees, fields, mapping, orchards, Apple Day, rivers…

The big book ‘England in Particular’ explores the richness of our everyday surroundings and offers a way of looking that has universal resonances, indeed Common Ground’s work has reached almost every continent.

This event is part of Thrifty Thursdays – a series of free events running alongside the forthcoming exhibition ‘The Land We Live In – The Land We Left Behind’. Taking the exhibition as a starting point to explore themes relating to the rural, each week a different artist, writer, gardener, land-worker, academic or performer will join us. The bar will be open before the event from 5.45 pm until 6.30 pm.
