Thursday Talks

The Modern Hotel in Britain

Speaker: Professor Bruce Peter

07 March 2019, 6pm for 6.30pm

Abstract:

Based on Bruce Peter’s recent book ‘The Modern Hotel in Britain’, this lecture focuses on Scottish examples of significant Art Deco and Modernist hotel buildings and interiors from the 1920s until the 1970s. The Beresford in Glasgow will be featured, as will numerous other pre- and post-war examples – ranging from city centre hotels to roadhouses, from airport hotels to leisure resorts, such as the controversial Aviemore Centre. The presentation will be richly illustrated with period photographs of buildings, interiors and publicity material.

Speaker Biography:

Bruce Peter is Professor of Design History at The Glasgow School of Art. He is a graduate of the GSA and of The Royal College of Art and has taught and researched in History & Theory at the GSA since 2002. He has written extensively about modern architecture and design for leisure, entertainment and transport and is particularly interested in passenger ship design. Recently, he has assisted in the curation of the Victoria & Albert Museum’s Ocean Liners: Speed and Style exhibition, currently showing at the V&A in Dundee.
