Kat Cruz, a first-generation British Filipino from South London, is a self-taught artist.

Over twenty years ago she started selling simple paintings based on ethnic stone/wood hand

carved sculptures of lovers, mother & child or families entwined - done on salvaged pieces of stage flooring and scraps of cloud from the Lyceum Theatre’s set of Lion King in London.

Since then, she has experimented with different techniques, evolved in her art skills and is

producing her own unique style of work.

Her work explores themes of sensuality, passion, energy and movement as well as

introducing culture from a British Filipino female’s perspective.

Kat will be holding her debut exhibition at the Firepit Gallery, showcasing pieces from her

collections ‘Best Part’ and ‘Duende’. This marks the first time she will be presenting her

work to the public.

‘Ti Umuna’ is Ilocano, her parent’s dialect from the northern region of the Philippines and

means ‘the first’. Kat wants to honour her roots, celebrate her first exhibition and new

journeys.

Why do you paint?

“Painting grounds me but also allows me to escape.

It is a way of expressing my emotions but also helps to sedate and heal.

I paint to portray an energy, and I paint to supply my own.”
