Tian-Tsui - Chinese feather art Workshop

By Westminster Community Hubs

Overview

Discover the ancient art of tian-tsui, crafting luminous blue feather jewellery in a hands-on workshop blending history and beauty.

In this workshop, we will explore a fascinating form of traditional Chinese jewelry

— Tian-tsui.

Historically, Tian-tsui were crafted using kingfisher feathers, gold

wires, pearls, and gemstones. The delicate feathers reflected sunlight in shimmering

shades of blue and green, giving each piece a radiant, lifelike beauty.

However, as the process required kingfisher feathers, it caused significant harm to

the birds and led to their decline. As a result, the art of Tian-tsui gradually faded

away in the late Qing dynasty.

Today, we will rediscover this beautiful traditional craft in an ethical and creative

way — using modern materials to recreate the elegance of Tian-tsui and experience

how ancient artisans once brought these exquisite works of art to life.

Please note that all are welcome, although Westminster residents living locally will be prioritised. Late arrivals may lose their spot.
