Once the area east of the Tower of London was alive with the maritime trade which brought goods from all over the globe. The river was alive with shipping, while sailors came ashore looking for fun after months of hardship. Then the docks fell silent.

Though development has threatened to scour away the traces of London’s maritime glory, you can yet see reminders of this time, tidemarks left behind among the reshaped East End. They tell a story of devastation and survival, and evoke the salty tang of life spent on London’s tidal artery.

Meet at Tower Gateway DLR station outside the Minories exit, at the bottom of the escalator.

The walk will take approximately 2 hours, and finishes at the church of St George in the East. For information on travel, please use Transport for London's Journey Planner.

This event is part of Totally Thames 2017, which runs from 1-30 September: please see this link for more information: www.totallythames.org
