Ever heard of Angry Birds? It may be a smash hit smartphone and tablet game but it is only a small part of the story. The huge potential of iOS and Android has proved massively attractive for developers. And that has led to an explosion of games for all sorts of devices from Apple's iPad to RIM's PlayBook and masses of all singing and all dancing mobiles.

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech said just under half of the UK populations owned a smartphone. Smartphones and tablets also raise the bar of creativity. How else can a developer hope to make a mark in saturated market and recoup their investment?

Volker Hirsch, Global Head of Business Development, Research In Motion

Volker is the Global Head of Business Development – Games for Research In Motion (BlackBerry) where he arrived via the acquisition of mobile social gaming platform Scoreloop where he was Chief Strategy Officer. He is also a co-founder of Blue Beck, a game and app development studio.

Volker has been in mobile since 1999. He worked with music artists like Britney Spears, Snoop Dogg and Duran Duran on the world’s first mobile artist services and has been in the mobile games sector almost from its start with Mforma/Hands-On Mobile and Connect2Media (which he co-founded) where he oversaw licensing and corporate development and worked with Marvel, Hasbro, Activision, LEGO, BMW, Konami, the World Poker Tour, Universal, Viacom, and many developers along the way. He also struck more than 200 distribution deals with carriers and OEM around the world.

Volker is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He regular speaks at top mobile and technology conferences around the world (incl. Mobile World Congress, CTIA, Oxford University, SXSW, MIP TV, etc.) and is a co-organiser of TEDx Youth @ Manchester. He blogs at and tweets @vhirsch.

Simon Oliver, Founder, HandCircus

Simon is the founder of London-based independent studio HandCircus, creators of the Rolando series for the iPhone and the action-adventure OKABU for PlayStation 3. HandCircus is dedicated to creating bold, original and playful games that take advantage of the new opportunities presented by digital distribution. Simon sits on the Develop conference advisory board, and has been ajudge forBAFTA,IGF,BIMA, and D&AD.Prior to starting HandCircus, Simon has enjoyed a varied career spent creating playful things, from Flash Games and educational exhibits to music toys and gallery installations.

Oli Christie, CEO, Neon Play

Oli set up Neon Play in June 2010. Since then, Neon Play has over 32 million iOS and Android game downloads and seven UK number one iPhone games including games such as Paper Glider, Flick Football and Traffic Panic 3D.

Oli has won over 25 games awards in his career and Neon Play has recently won 10 business awards, including the UK’s Best Start-up in the Nectar Business Awards. Oli was also somehow voted as the 2011 Entrepreneur of the Year in the Chamber of Commerce Awards.

Eight months after launch, Pocket Gamer rated Neon Play as the number one independent mobile games developer in the UK.

Suresh Sudera, Head of Games, Vodafone Group

Offering over ten years of experience in mobile, Suresh’s career has enabled him to gain invaluable and extensive experience of commercial management and technical development of terminals, networked platforms & content.

As head of games at Vodafone Group, Suresh is responsible for games on a global level, implementing and evangelising Group strategy, managing over 20 global content relationships and content for some 27 territories worldwide across the Vodafone and partner network footprint.

Back in 2002 Suresh successfully launched Vodafone UK’s Java games download service and later worked as business development manager for Vodafone Group where he was involved in the company’s worldwide 3G launch in November 2004. More recently, he has been focussed in delivering Vodafone’s centralised android and social gaming strategies.

Suresh cut his teeth as a product manager for Psion in 1998 and moved to Purple Software in 2001 where he worked on a range of award winning PDA and Smartphone applications. His strengths include strong partner relations and effective negotiation and influencing skills, coupled with an unrivalled knowledge of the intricacies and inner workings of the mobile games industry.

Andrew Roper, Programmer, IndieSkies

Andrew is a Student, and a Games Programmer at IndieSkies. Andrew started his game development during his GCSE's, developing a text-based browser MMORPG. Since then, he has dabbled in multiple areas of game design and development whilst working through A-Levels and University, and has recently settled into focusing on mobile games development. IndieSkies is a company setup during the sandwich year of a University Degree in Derby in 2011. Dedicated to producing high quality games and interactive experiences, IndieSkies have released two games so far on iOS (Paradise Golf & Boulder Run) with a third due for release at the end of January. Not just focusing on mobile development, IndieSkies have also developed for XBLIG and are looking into other mediums for delivering interactive experiences and games in the future.

Matthew joinedGamesIndustry.bizafter five years working for award-winning UK magazines gamesTM, where he was features editor, writing and commissioning long-form journalism on all aspects of the games industry and video game culture. He has also worked as games editor for PC Advisor, and contributed freelance articles to a wide range of magazines and websites including X360, Play, 3D Artist, Sci-Fi Now and Hot It Works.

Rick Gibson, Director, Games Investor

Rick Gibson is a Director of Games Investor Consulting. Since 2003, GIC has provided commercial assessments of over 60 titles as well as consultancy services (such as marketing, monetisation and distribution optimisation) to over 40 games companies including studios such as Jagex, Eutechnyx, Ideaworks3D and eeGeo, as well as strategy and corporate finance consultancy to over 40 finance and media companies.

Tak Fung, Founder, Supermono

Tak graduated from the University of Cambridge in Computer Science and was very soon working for premier developer Lionhead Studios. After 6 years and 3 major titles including the Fable series under his belt Tak made the bold move to leave salary man lifestyle and develop his own games.The app store didn't exist then but soon became the platform of choice and he founded Supermono Studios with Art Director Dave Ferner.

Supermono Studios delivered 4 original titles within 3 years and grew to a fulltime studio of 7 people. These include MiniSquadron, Fox vs Duck, EpicWin and most recently Forever Drive, a freemium action racing title set in the future where players create their own tracks and share them with the community. And next? Well, Supermono have a new office in the heart of Shoreditch, London and the team are focused on cracking  location based game ideas


IOJOE is a small independant game development company based in London, founded by Simon West. We started out making Flash browser games and recently we've begun making mobile games. Along with Juan Jimenez of AAARGB! we made Gingerbread Circus for iOS and Android devices and we've just launched our second game which is called Snappy.

Alistair Aitcheson, Independent Developer, Greedy Bankers. Greedy Bankers is a game of big risks and excessive rewards - the ultimate fast-paced and mind-bending matching game for opportunistic iPhone owners! Greedy Bankers vs The World takes on the mantle of its iPhone predecessor and offers a competitive puzzle-strategy frenzy where cheating and stealing are the order of the day.

Free Fall Interactive present "The Age of Cogman” is a exploration title, about the evolution of man. You play as Cogman, a bubbly comedic children’s character trying to come to terms with his evolving tribe. The game is adventure based requiring children to collect items to fashion prehistoric tools (such as spears,hammers, apparel, etc).
