Description

In retail volunteering, Time is Money. Effective volunteer management can drive income and increase store effiency.

24 April 2018 at The Crypt, Christ Church Spitalfields Commercial Street | Spitalfields | London

10:30 - 4:30

The CRA has identified good volunteer management as the most pressing issue facing charity retail organisations:

What's the best practice for managing volunteers in a retail environment?

How can we support store managers to utilise volunteering as a resource?

Do you want to to break the silos and explode the myths of retail volunteering?

This event will examine ways to bring good volunteer management practice and experience into the retail sphere. In particular: how to engage and involve a new generation of potential volunteers; how to safeguard and protect volunteers and staff; how to develop new volunteering roles; how to help retail managers understand and utilise the full potential of volunteers.

Agenda (subject to change)

10:30 Arrivals, tea, coffee and networking.

11am Welcome from Angela Wilson, AVM Director.

11:10 Rob Jackson, Consultant: Understanding and engaging 21st Century volunteers.

The changing face of volunteering and how new volunteer roles can be developed to better suit the new generation of people offering to volunteer in retail situations. There are several myths and stigmas attached to retail volunteering: who volunteers; what they do; how they are managed. This session will aim to bust those myths and offer realisitc aternatives.

12:15 Interactive activity from Rob Jackson.

Based on the previous session.

12:50 Robin Osterley, Chief Executive, Charity Retail Association: The social value of volunteering in a charity shop.

Preceded by a short film, Robin will be considering how retail managers in charity shops also fulfill the role of volunteer managers. This aspect of charity retail has been identified by the CRA as being of vital importance at this time. There are a huge and diverse number of charity retail volunteers, and Robin will present the CRA's guidance on best practice, as learned from the experiences of various member organisations. This can be compared with AVM members' experience.

1:30 Lunch, provided.

2:15 pm Networking activity, facilitated by Angela Wilson and Rob Jackson.

2:45 Roy Clark, Director for Retail and Trading, Barnardo's: Restructuring retail volunteering.

Roy will speak about Barnardo's success in restructuring their retail operation, achieving more hours from fewer volunteers. This was part of a concerted effort to respond to volunteers' feedback, helping them to feel less isolated and more connected. It also entailed collaborating with teams such as fundraising to share best practice across the organisation. He wil also tell us about the volunteer champions.

3:20 Liz Reed, Volunteering Business Partner and Karen Janes, Head of Volunteering Development, Blue Cross: Growing a retail operation.

Looking at the retail experience of Blue Cross, where their operation expanded quite rapidly. How was this expansion managed, from a business perspective? This presentation will include an update on the Blue Cross retail volunteering journey, following on from Liz's presentation for AVM in 2016. How have their plans evolved and worked out?

4:15 Closing address.

4:30 Finish.
