Description

A moderate 5 mile circular walk to Tintern in the Wye Valley

Renowned for its medieval abbey, Tintern and the Wye valley is designated as an area of outstanding beauty. See the abbey, walk up to the Eagles nest view point, through the mystical forest and return via the old monks path. Hear from William Wordsworth poet and politician, Valentine Morris and the monks who made this area such a must see tourist attraction.

Length: 5 miles, Moderate

Terrain: Woodland, fields and lanes with some steep paths up to cliffs.

We will stop in Tintern for lunch. A café and a pub are available for drinks. Option to bring a picnic or buy lunch.

See:

  • One of the best views in the Wye Valley from the Eagles Nest, including views of the old and new Severn bridge, the meandering River Wye and beautiful countryside.
  • Watchers Wood – Well that’s what Jan calls it! Amazing ancient woodland with Tree Folk and Stone People! Know nature is looking at you as much as you’re gazing at it!
  • Tintern Abbey (exterior) – but has it been moved?

Walk:

  • Up to the Eagles nest view point, along part of the Wye Valley walk and around the earth works of a hill fort, down into Tintern.
  • Follow the old medieval route from Tintern to St Arvans, encompassing Old Mares gate to the cliffs of Upper Wycliff.

Hear:

  • How Valentine Morris, local politician and the designer of the Piercefield picturesque walks, ended up in prison.
  • Why are those watchers watching in the wood and what’s the legend behind Old Mares gate?
  • How Wordsworth was severely criticised for his poem and views on Tintern Abbey.

Directions: Lower Wyndcliff forestry car park is on the A466, 3 and a half miles from Chepstow.

Coming from Chepstow, it is on the right-hand side before Tintern abbey. Coming from Monmouth, it is on the left-hand side after Tintern abbey. Post code for Tintern Abbey NP16 6SE


PLEASE NOTE: This walk does not include a tour of the Abbey. Please feel free to do so, before or after the walk. Last admission is 5.30pm. There is an entrance fee.

Please note that on rare occasions due to circumstances beyond our control, a walk may need to be rerouted.

Attendees are responsible for their own safety and come on the walk at their own risk.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

This event is suitable for age 12+.

What to wear: Walking boots or very sturdy footwear are required. It can be steep and slippery! Dress for the weather (layers are best).

What to bring: Please do not bring pets to the event. Guide dogs and other support animals are welcome.
