Tipping the Velvet is a play, adapted by Laura Wade from Sarah Waters' novel, about the coming-of-age journey of Nancy Astley, a Whitstable oyster girl who runs away to London and falls for the male impersonator Kitty Butler, leading her into a world of metropolitan excess and a journey of sexual discovery in Victorian England's music halls and clandestine queer com-munities.
