Description

Title ' The Soldiers of St Patrick - Mexico's Irish Heroes '

The heroic yet tragic tale of Mexico's St Patrick's battalion, during Mexico's war with the USA of 1846-48. We will look at how Ireland's potato famine & Irish mass-migration to the USA, combined with America's first war of conquest against its supposedly racially inferior and Catholic southern neighbour drove a few hundred Irishmen and other Catholic immigrants to desert the ranks of the US Army and defect to fight for faith and freedom under Mexico's flag. Some saw them as traitors, to others they were heroes, risking their necks for their principles and to escape persecution and discrimination. We will also look at the little-known war of 1846-48 which saw Mexico lose more than half of its territory to the USA, the causes of the conflict, how the war was actually fought, the famous personalities involved on both sides and what role the Irish battalion known as 'Los San Patricios' played in the war that reshaped North America forever."
