About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 15 minutes

Heads and Literacy Leads from Tiverton's 11 primary school are invited to come to this introductory session about Tiverton Reads Together. Refreshments will be provided.

Externally funded by Devon Community Foundation for 1 year, Tiverton Reads Together will support Tiverton's schools and library as they work together to promote and encourage reading for pleasure.

At this twilight session you will:

  • Be able to sign up as an official project partner
  • Learn more about the scope of the project, our funding and evaluation plans
  • Receive your complimentary 1 year premium membership of the School Literacy Network (valued at £595+VAT)
  • Discuss a high-quality children’s book that you have used to teach writing.

What to Bring:

  • Names and email addresses of your staff, including the school admin (for SLN registration)
  • A laptop
  • A book for book talk (see below)

Book Talk - led by Dora Allen, Manager of SLN with 20+ years experience teaching primary English

Please be ready to share a high-quality children’s book that you have used to teach writing. Bring the book with you and try to persuade your colleagues that this book is an excellent stimulus for pupils. When selecting, consider:

  • How/Why you chose the text?
  • Did it link to a topic?
  • What writing opportunities did the text provide?
  • Were opportunities to teach grammar skills embedded in the text?
  • How did the children respond to the text?
  • What wider themes does the book explore? Diversity, Equality or Inclusion?
  • Are there illustrations that enhance the book?
  • How did you use these?
  • What opportunities to celebrate the book/author/illustrator did you explore?
  • How did you publish your written outcomes?
