Event description
TMiP, supported by the Royal Institution, is hosting a Demo Day to support maths communicators in developing live stage demonstrations.

About this Event

Demo Day will take place in the Sunley Room at the Royal Institution on Wednesday 19th June from 11am-5pm, and will be run by Talking Maths in Public organisers Sam Durbin and Katie Steckles, with science presenter & demo veteran Greg Foot.

Live stage demonstrations are a great way to make communication more memorable and engaging for audiences. In mathematics communication, however, it's less common - it's often difficult to incorporate this kind of thing into our practice, as the maths we're talking about is more abstract and conceptual, and maths communicators generally have less experience of working demonstrations into routines.

But it can be done, and when it's done well it can be VERY effective! We're hoping to encourage maths communicators to include more demos in their workshops, talks and stage shows, and invite you to come and develop your own - from partly-formed ideas, to demos you already use regularly, we want to support you to develop and polish your demonstrations, and to better build them into your practice.

Science Presenter & Producer Greg Foot - who, as well as his work on multiple TV series, YouTube channels and recent BBC Radio 4 series, is well known for performing educational demos on stages around the world - will share some wisdom on preparing stage demos, sourcing materials and equipment, crafting explanations around the demonstrations and troubleshooting what to do when they go wrong. Participants will be supported in developing their own mathematical stage demos, and help each other by sharing ideas, tips and best practice.

Our aim for the day is that you should leave with increased confidence in performing demos to communicate maths, and the ideas you develop in this session can be used as part of your own personal practice and to augment your own work, and/or that of the organisation you work for.

Participants in the Demo Day who also attend the Talking Maths in Public conference in August (details at talkingmathsinpublic.uk) will be invited to showcase the demos they develop during Demo Day at a special allocated session during the conference, to allow other members of the maths outreach community to learn from, be inspired by, and give constructive feedback on what you've created.

The Sunley Room is on the ground floor at the Ri, and time will be allocated during the day for a picnic lunch - participants are encouraged to bring a packed lunch, or food can be purchased from nearby outlets. If you have any questions about the event, please contact the organisers by email: info@talkingmathsinpublic.uk.
