Our webinars will be held monthly and will welcome industry experts to talk about a wide range of mammals and all things mammal related.

SARS-CoV-2 originally arose as a spill over from animals into humans and in the two years since then multiple new animal species have contracted the virus from humans, including the current large scale outbreak in white tailed deer in the USA. This talk will summarise what is known about SARs-CoV-2 in animals, including work from our current research project on UK wildlife and will discuss what is likely to happen going forward.

Rachael is an Associate Professor of Veterinary Cellular Microbiology and a European Diplomate in Veterinary Microbiology. Her research expertise is in animal virology, particularly retroviruses but covers a broad range of virology and genetics methods in domestic and exotic species with current project on retroviruses in koalas, cats and sheep as well as SARs-Cov-2 monitoring in wildlife. She graduated with a BVSc from Sydney University in 1999 and worked in mixed practice in Australia and the UK. She then did PhD on retroviruses of koalas at the University of Queensland and then spent time after this working as a postdoctoral researcher for the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and at Georg August Universitaet Goettingen in Germany. She joined the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science at Nottigham in 2007 where she teaches undergraduate and clinical phase veterinary medicine students and runs a research program in animal infectious diseases. The talk will finish with a question and answer session by those attending the webinar, so if you have any questions get them ready to be answered! This event was held at 7:30 pm GMT on Wednesday the 27th of April on Zoom and ticket proceeds went towards the conservation work of the charity.

Organised by

We are the only organisation involved in the study and conservation of all British mammals - from dormice to dolphins, and bats to badgers. We support a growing network of amateur and professional mammalogists and conservationists working for mammals across the country and abroad, and provide a hub of information and expertise. We are the national voice for mammal conservation, working to identify the threats mammals face and halt declines before it’s too late; we provide scientific advice to advocate sound conservation policies based on thorough research and surveying; and we inform and educate people of all ages to raise awareness of mammal conservation issues.

THE MAMMAL SOCIETY IS VAT REGISTERED BUT WE ARE AN ELIGIBLE BODY SO OUR TRAINING & EVENTS ARE VAT EXEMPT.
