Event description

Description

Chrissie Wellington OBE is an iconic figure in the history of triathlon. She is a four-time World Ironman Champion, and holds the current world record for the Ironman distance, a race that is widely considered to be one of the most challenging one-day events in world sport (it comprises a 2.4 mile swim followed by a 112 mile cycle and then a marathon). She is the only triathlete, male or female, to have won the World Ironman Championship less than a year after turning professional, and still holds the overall World Record – a time of 8 hours 18 mins 13 seconds. Chrissie was named the 2009 Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year, and was appointed an MBE for ‘services to Ironman Triathlon’ in 2010, followed by an OBE for services to sport and charity in 2016. Before becoming a professional triathlete, Chrissie worked for the British government as a policy adviser on international development. Development issues remain one of her passions, and she is a passionate advocate on issues relating to gender equality in sport, including being part of a UK government all-party parliamentary committee on women and sport. Having retired in 2012, Chrissie is now Head of Participation for parkrun, which organises free, weekly 5k and 2k runs in areas of open space in the UK, and around the world. She ran the London Marathon in 2017. Her autobiography A Life Without Limits: A World Champion’s Journey, published in 2012, was a Sunday Times Number One bestseller.
