During this workshop you will be guided through the traditional Japanese practice of repairing your broken pottery; named Kintsugi. After learning about this technique, you will be invited to join Jess and begin to repair on your own cherished item. Following this you will have the opportunity to ask questions about ceramic repair.

50% of all ticket and on-demand sales will be donated by TOAST to Crafts Council UK to support their Young Citizens Programme - offering workshops, paid opportunities and creative and professional advice for young people from all backgrounds interested in shaping the future of craft, design and making in the UK.

Materials required:

  • Broken item of pottery. It is easier to start with a good surface so preferably avoid using items such as porcelain
  • Fine grain sandpaper
  • Exoxy Glue; these come as two separate substances which should be mixed together. Recommended to purchase from JDiction online.
  • A container to hold the glue; items such as recycled yoghurt pots
  • Food safe gold dust
  • Cloth or paper towel; used to catch the drips from repairing
  • Paintbrush, cotton buds or toothpicks
  • Newspaper to protect the working surface
  • Sugru glue. Recommended to purchase from sugru online
  • Gloves and masks to protect from glue fumes; if not, please ensure you work in a ​well-ventilated room
  • Masking tape

Jessica Smulders-Cohen is a repair specialist who enjoys encountering garments that show signs of being truly loved over many years. Reflecting her thoughtful approach to increasing the longevity of clothing, she studied Sustainable Design at Kingston University. Jess is based at TOAST London, Shoreditch, mending garments for our free repair service, TOAST Renewal.
