Toby Hay - music for the 6 and 12 string guitar with support from C Joynes
Overview
Toby Hay is a guitar player and composer. Fascinated by the connection between landscape and music, with inspiration ranging from time working for the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust, to his recent Masters in Music & The Environment and the landscapes of the Cambrian Mountains where he lives. Hay’s music also explores the relationship between musician and instrument and the connection between improvisation and composition. Toby has toured all over the UK & Ireland performing solo, or collaborating with other musicians. He is the founder of Cambrian Records.
“Toby Hay’s New Music for the 12 String Guitar showcases the Welsh instrumentalist’s glowing, intricate style” — The Guardian
Toby will be joined by C Joynes, who has ploughed a singular furrow through solo guitar, with a body of work incorporating English folk-tunes alongside North & West African music, and lifting proto-minimalist and improvised techniques from the European classical and avant-garde traditions. Shifting away from the electric guitar of his most recent solo activities, he’s currently exploring the uses of an amplified archtop guitar, exploiting the instrument’s potential by placing intricate parlour music alongside overdriven garage blues throw-downs and the brittle ringing tones of free improvisation.
Doors open and bar at 6.30pm.
