About this event

This session with musician and storyteller Mandisi Dyantyis will explore the past, present and future of choral music. Known as a storyteller, his own musical writing style has been described as a combination of storytelling and commentary on real life situations.

Join him for a workshop of engaging discussion and learn songs which tell modern stories of relevance. No prior musical experience is needed – just an enthusiasm to learn and participate

Mandisi Dyantyis is a well-established trumpeter, singer, composer, and arranger. He is Associate Director and co-Music Director of the Isango Ensemble since 2006.

He currently resides in Cape Town where he contributes to the musical culture of this city by regularly putting on his own performances and collaborating with other artists in the community.

Together Twilight Sessions is a programme of workshops and conversations with internationally renowned vocal artists and musical experts.

Inviting audiences to delve into a wide range of vocal and musical styles, the Together Twilight Sessions workshops are designed for anyone curious to know more about the multi-faceted aspects of music, with a particular focus on singing and the voice. .

Artist Biography

Port Elizabeth born and bred Mandisi Dyantyis is a well-established trumpeter, singer, composer, and arranger. A graduate of the University of Cape Town (2005) BMus Honors in jazz studies Mandisi is a well versed musician whose knowledge and expertise spans across genres and disciplines. As a trumpeter he has collaborated and worked with various musicians including the likes of Jimmy Dludlu, The Abdullah Ibrahim Big Band, and Moreira Chonguica which speaks to the caliber of his playing. Dyantyis who currently holds a lecturing position at his alma mater UCT, at the South African College of Music has also produced and co-written on Nomfundo Xaluva’s multi-award winning albums KUSILE and From.Now.On. In sticking true to his versatility and virtuosity Dyantyis has also been the Associate Director and co-Music Director of the Isango Ensemble since 2006. The Isango Ensemble is a world renowned theatre company which travels globe putting on world class productions including the well-known A Man of Goodhope production in 2016 for which Mandisi composed and conducted the music.

Known as a good storyteller, his own musical writing style has been described as a combination of storytelling and commentary on real life situations. He touches on what it means to be a Xhosa man in these times and how to be a Xhosa person of dignity, intelligence, passion, and pride while the nation around us is moving further and further away from our African story. His performances captivate the audience as he sings in his mother tongue and plays prolifically on the trumpet. Mandisi currently resides in Cape Town where he contributes to the musical culture of this city by regularly putting on his own performances and collaborating with other artists in the community.
