Event description
Virtual Session - Encouraging reluctant readers to read for pleasure - With Author Tom Palmer

About this Event

Join popular children’s author, Tom Palmer, and practicing junior school headteacher, Simon Robinson for an hour of ideas and practical solutions for engaging reluctant readers with reading for pleasure. Tom is a children’s author. He will talk about how his own struggles with reading as a child were solved by reading about his love of football. He has worked in schools – promoting reading for pleasure – for 15 years, often in partnership with the National Literacy Trust as well as football clubs and museums. Tom will speak about his own experience and techniques he has used to encourage reluctant readers from Y3 to Y9.

Simon has been a headteacher at Cotmanhay Junior School in Derbyshire for a decade. He works tirelessly to promote reading for pleasure among his pupils, for many of whom have no books or reading role models at home. His intervention groups and one-to-one sessions with the children have helped make reading the highlight of many children’s day at school. Simon and Tom have worked together on various projects for several years, including setting up the first Roy of the Rovers school and writing a book together aimed at the children on the Cotmanhay Estate.
