Too Late to Patch? Rethinking Amblyopia Boundaries

CPD reference: C-112430

The general rule of thumb for patching treatment of amblyopes, is that we must treat their amblyopia during their critical period of visual period until the age of 7-8 years – if beyond this age, then it is too late. Recent literature supports the notion that patching can be advocated in older children beyond the age of 8 years given the successful management of amblyopia in such cases. So, the question we ought to ask ourselves in practice when faced with an older child/teen with asymmetric visual acuities is, is it too late to patch?

This interactive lecture for GPs, Optometrists and Opticians will be led by our fantastic guest speaker Mr Zishan Naeem on Thursday 19th June at 6.30pm at Clinica London, 140 Harley Street, W1G 7LB.

Key educational aims of the meeting include:

  1. To review the definition of amblyopia.
  2. To review the types of cases that warrant referral to an orthoptist/ophthalmologist for management of amblyopia.
  3. To review the management of amblyopia.
  4. To review recent literature relating to the management of amblyopia.
  5. To review how to alter one’s practice of older amblyopes.
