Keeping tools sharp and in good condition is absolutely vital for the skills that are taught on DRST courses. The aim of this course is to enable persons to maintain a good edge on a range of cutting tools including chainsaws.
The course is designed to prepare edge tools for use, including billhooks, axes, scythes, and sickles. Other garden and woodworking tools such as shears, secateurs, plane irons and chisels are also welcome. There is also a chainsaw expert on hand for advice in maintenance and sharpening.
You will learn how to sharpen edge tools using files, stones, and leather strops. How to control the tools whilst being sharpened and once sharpened, keeping them in good condition.
At the end of the course, each attendee will be given a leather strop.
This year there is also the opportunity on the course to learn how to make a Saw Horse .
Mick Godfrey of Devon Rural Skills Trust will lead up to 5 people in making a 'Saw Horse'; a useful foldable workstation for processing felled timber. This will cost an additional £20, payable in cash on the day. You will need to bring some tools with you. For more information or to book a place on this supplementary course email me on " payments@drst.org.uk ".
There is ample parking at the venue and though most of the course will be outside we can work under shelter if it rains. There are also good, accessible toilet facilities here.
