Event description
Topiary artist Darren Lerigo hosts this discussion about the role of topiary in modern garden design.

About this event

As a topiary artist, I am thrilled by the 'green architecture' topiary and hedges provide. But how can it be used in a way that is relevant to modern life?

For example:

  • Can we use topiary to capture carbon?
  • Provide habitat for wildlife?
  • Reduce maintenance?
  • Provide food for health or fragrance for wellbeing?

This discussion is for garden designers who want to explore a different way of thinking about topiary. To move away from the twee, to something useful and considered.

I work all over the UK designing and making all kinds of topiary shapes, from formal through to abstract. But the same ideas keep coming up again and again ("can I have something that looks like Alice in Wonderland please?")

I want to use this 45 minute discussion to provoke the people designing gardens now, to think about the use of sculpted plants in a new way.

To discover how topiary works best in a modern garden.

I hope you will join me!

Darren, Topiary Artist UK
