Event description

Description

A chance to visit one of Britain’s first community-owned hydro projects and hear from those who made it happen. Torrs Hydro is owned by more than 200 local shareholders, sells the power it generates to the local Co-operative supermarket and has given grants to many local community projects. Come and meet ‘Archie’ (the single archimedes screw turbine) and hear from some of the volunteer Directors who make the project happen.

This tour is specifically aimed at those who are thinking of starting their own community-owned renewable project (whatever source of power you’re thinking of using) and would like to get inspiration and advice from those who have already done it.

The tour will last up to two hours, but might be a little shorter, depending on how many questions people have.

More information on getting to Torrs Hydro by train, bus or car: http://www.torrshydro.org/TorrsHydro/Visit-Us.html

It is possible to park in the Co-op Supermarket car park (SK22 4NG) and then walk down to the hydro.

All visitors need suitable footwear and clothing as it is uneven under foot, possibly wet and muddy, and downhill. There are no facilities on site, but toilets and cafes are available in New Mills town centre.
