About this Event

This event is for Institute of Education Undergraduate Students only - please use your UCL email address to book your place.

Do you suffer from exam stress? Do assignment deadlines make you anxious? Would you benefit from skillful and sustainable coping strategies in times of aversity and hardship?

Learn 12 simple tools to help you with university life

The Institute of Education has teamed up with Tough Cookie to deliver a mental resilience training programme aimed at IOE undergraduate students. The programme is designed to improve psychological resilience and wellbeing. Students are introduced to ‘Mixed Mental Arts’, a toolbox of 12 practical mindfulness-based techniques that transform how they manage stress and adversity by improving their relationship with thoughts and emotions. These practical techniques address how to calm an anxious mind, manage the body's stress response, develop meta-cognition, mitigate intrusive thoughts, self-regulate in high-pressure situations, be with difficult emotions, relax the body, and self-generate positive emotional states.  The course is a preventative programme aimed at equipping you with the cognitive and emotional skills to navigate the challenges you face skillfully and sustainably, to prevent overwhelm, and mitigate the likelihood of more serious stages of mental health deterioration. As such it is not appropriate for anyone with a clinical mental health diagnosis or currently experiencing severe mental health problems. If you are in doubt about whether this course is suitable for you, please don’t hesitate to contact b.nasim@ucl.ac.uk.

The course is free to IOE undergraduate students and delivered over six 1-hour modules.

• Session 1: Breaking our Addiction to Thought

• Session 2: Hacking Our Body’s Stress Response

• Session 3: Neutralising Unhelpful Thought Patterns

• Session 4: Navigating Overwhelming Experiences

• Session 5: Re-Learning Relaxation

• Session 6: Reclaiming Emotional Autonomy

Attendance to each of the sessions will be registered and a certification of completion will be administered to students upon satisfactory attendance on the programme. Employers value the benefit resilience training has on their employees.

The programme will be delivered by Bilal Nasim, a research officer and lecturer in the UCL department of Social Science and a trained personal resilience practitioner with the social enterprise, Tough Cookie. With UCL he is also the Joint Degree Tutor for both the SS and SSQM degrees. Tough Cookie (https://www.tough-cookie.co.uk/) are resilience specialists, established as the mental resilience training supplier of choice with a number of leading organisations, ranging from the UKs biggest mental health charities (Mind, Time to Change) to corporates (Facebook, Sky, Shell)

We look forward to you joining this excellent training!
