Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at one of the finest surviving railway dining carriages in the country. The LNER Coach Association cares for 27 vintage teak-bodied carriages, but ECJS 189, built in 1894 for the East Coast Joint Stock Company, is truly the crown jewel of the collection.
Currently under restoration, this exquisite carriage showcases the opulence of late Victorian railway travel, complete with gold-leafed Lincrusta panels and richly varnished teak interiors. Step inside and you’ll get a real sense of how luxurious dining at speed once was.
Your guide for the tour is a member of the LNER Coach Association and part of the hands-on team bringing this historic vehicle back to life. You’ll be welcomed into the restoration shed, located just off the NYMR car park in Pickering (look for the large green and white building with steps up to the entrance).
The tour includes entry into the carriage itself via a short set of steps. We look forward to sharing this remarkable piece of railway heritage with you.
