Date: Saturday 18th March 2017
Time: 13:15 for AGM and 14:00 for tours
Venue: meet at Eastgate Arts Centre, Peebles
Ticket: free for AGM / £10 for Grandison tour / £20 for Grandison and Traquair tours
Join us for the SPAB Scotland AGM at the Eastgate Arts Centre in Peebles, followed by an exclusive tour of Grandison's Plaster Workshops and a visit to Traquair House.
We will start the afternoon with our short AGM to be held in the Eastgate Arts Centre in Peebles, a church converted to great acclaim by Richard Murphy Architects in 2004. SPAB are always interested to see how buildings can be reused, and we hope this will provide a talking point for members.
The small market town of Peebles is home to another hidden gem – the Grandisons Plaster Workshops, where Leonard Grandison has been hand crafting decorative mouldings in lime plaster for decades. There will be two tour groups (numbers are limited unfortunately) who will get to view the workshops and the fascinating collection of historic plaster samples and small museum, and hear Leonard talk about his work.
Finally, we have arranged an 'out of season' visit to the very fine Traquair House only a few miles from Peebles in order to view decorative plasterwork in situ.
We hope that this event will build on the great success of our previous AGM in Falkland in 2016, where we had a record turn out.
The event will include a short presentation by William Napier on the development of pre-1707 decorative plasterwork in Scotland.
William is a Chartered Building Surveyor and Architectural Historian, who previously served a traditional plastering apprenticeship with L. Grandison & Son in Peebles. After completing his Building Surveying degree and undertaking a two year building conservation internship with Historic Scotland, William worked at the Scottish Lime Centre for three years before joining the National Trust for Scotland in 2001 as a Building Surveyor where he was part of a team responsible for the maintenance and repair of a wide range of properties throughout south and central Scotland. In 2012 William completed his PhD, ‘Kinship and Politics in the Art of Decoration', a study of Scottish Renaissance decorative plasterwork and interiors and in 2016, with his business partner, Rob Adams, established the Adams Napier Partnership, a Chartered Surveying and Heritage Consultancy based in Peebles.
