Event description

Description

Friday 30 October – Tour of Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is the royal church where English kings and queens are crowned. It is also a royal mausoleum, with 17 royal burials and where Prince William married Catherine Middleton in 2011. We will explore these wonderful royal links, seeing the Coronation Chair on which famous kings like Henry VIII and queens like Queen Victoria were crowned, as well admiring the tombs of great leaders like Elizabeth I and Henry V. In the 19th century the Abbey also developed as the nation’s church, where the great and good of the land are buried or commemorated, from Charles Dickens to Isaac Newton, and we will learn about some of the great people remembered here and what it takes to get a memorial today!

Above all, we will soak up its awe-inspiring medieval gothic architecture, including the Henry VII chapel considered by many to be “the loveliest chapel in England” and home of one of our senior orders of chivalry.

Tickets for Westminster Abbey MUST be booked on the day in order to access the groups entrance (and avoid the main public queue). You will benefit from the group discount (the cheapest rate available). Tickets will be purchased by Caroline at the Chapter Office so it is ESSENTIAL that you each bring the exact correct change (individuals are not allowed to use the Chapter House ticket office).

The tour does NOT include the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Gallery. If you wish to add this then you can do so on the day by purchasing a ticket inside the Abbey for £5 at the end of the tour. Last entry is usually 15:30

Note: Please be aware that this is a daytime tour (unlike our normal evening programme) so please make sure you can attend.

Meet: at 13:00 for a prompt start at 13:15, at the West Front of Westminster Abbey (at the base of the 2 white towers and next to the Westminster Abbey shop)

End: approx. 15:15 at Westminster Abbey

Ticket price (exact cash to be brought to give to Caroline): 2020 group ticket prices are: £21 adult and £17 concession (age 65+ and students)
