Description

Course dates

This is a two-part course, running on Wednesday, January 10 and Wednesday, January 31, from 3pm to 6pm. Booking on this page covers both sessions; please ensure you can attend both dates before booking.

About the course

This CPD is a sandwich course with two distinct parts. The first session will address the question of what it means to be a whole-school leader and to be leading on curriculum. Subject differences are significant for the structure of curricula and assessment, and for organisation of teachers’ practice, knowledge and development. But built into the structure of a school is a need for generic proxies – from performance measures to precepts for pedagogy. These are inevitably at one remove from the actual substance what is being taught and learned.

So given that no senior leader can be master of 15 subjects, how does a senior leader take assurance from a middle/subject leader? How does a senior leader ensure that behind every data conversation is a curriculum conversation? Attendees will take away seven principles which supply a curricular language for improving conversations between middle and senior leaders. Each principle supplies a category of question which a senior curriculum leader might ask of middle/subject leader when probing teacher performance and fostering its nurture.

Participants will have time to reflect on the implications of their learning for their own school context before the highly practical second session. The second session explains the implications of a knowledge-rich curriculum for whole school management systems. It will be a chance to share ideas and practical solutions to the whole school challenges. The session will explore the implications of a knowledge-rich curriculum for schemes of learning and evaluating curriculum efficacy, teaching and learning priorities and lesson observation guidance as well as the implications for line management and accountability systems.

Who should attend?

The course is particularly suitable for secondary senior leaders who are interested in leading whole-staff development and debate on a ‘knowledge-based’ curriculum. The course will build the confidence of senior leaders to illuminate rather than conceal crucial subject dimensions, build better definitions of rigour in teaching and make data easier to interpret.
