Tower Bridge and Guildhall School present 'Terra Incognita - Here be Dragon...
Unique installation in the Bridge's cavernous Bascule Chamber
The Guildhall School and Tower Bridge present Terra Incognita - Here be Dragons, a site-specific light and sound installation in the unique setting of the Bascule Chamber of Tower Bridge.
These specially-commissioned new works created by artists from the Guildhall School take inspiration from the atmospheric Bascule Chamber itself – a secret space hidden in the depths of the world’s most famous bridge. The Chamber is the operational area that houses the Bridge's huge counterweights used during Bridge Lifts. When the Bridge is at rest, this huge brick-lined space stands empty: a dramatic, subterranean Victorian space normally out of bounds for everyday visitors.
This unique experience combining light, sound, and projected imagery challenges the audience to look beyond the surface. Audiences are invited to ‘review’ and ‘re-evaluate’ their relationship with the city and their perception of its history and character.
If you fancy immersing yourself in this exclusive performance, then book your tickets now. Tickets are extremely limited due to the capacity of the Bascule Chamber.
A partnership initiated by Guildhall Library.
Cost: £30 per person. Or for £35 guests can enhance their experience with a visit to the Tower Bridge Exhibition where they can step inside the most famous bridge in the world to explore its iconic structure, glass floor and magnificent Victorian Engine Room.
Running time: 1 hour
(The event lasts approximately 1 hour including descending the 120 steps from bridge level down into the Chamber).
Please arrive 10 minutes before your performance start time.
This event features steep stairs, spiral staircases and areas that are considered confined spaces. If you have access requirements please discuss this with us before booking your tickets. The event space is not fully accessible.
The event includes outdoor spaces, areas which are naturally dirty as part of Bridge operations and damp/ cold spaces which are beneath the river, all exposed to the elements. All ticket holders should wear appropriate footwear (no high-heels) and practical warm clothing. If bad weather is forecast, wet weather clothing is recommended for the waiting area only.
Due to the City of London Corporation's statutory obligation to raise Tower Bridge for river traffic with 24 hours' notice, it is possible that booked bridge lifts alter the defined performance times slightly.
The performance will contain flashing images.
All ticket holders must be 16 years of age or older. Anyone under the age of 16 attempting to gain access will be refused entry.
