Event description

Description

Celebrating the Bicentenary of Sir Horace Jones (b 20/05/1819) on the occasion of his 200th Birthday!

Tower Bridge opened on 20 June 1894, some seven years after the death of its designer, the great Horace Jones. For millions around the world, along with the Palace of Westminster and the Tower, it represents London itself.

We'll discover the history of the Bridge’s design and construction from one of the bridge's accredited hosts; take in unparalleled views through our spectacular Glass Floor and high-level Walkways, and get up close to the original steam engines, accumulators and boilers in the Victorian Engine Rooms.

We explore the Bridge’s operational areas including the Control Cabin, Machinery Room and the immense Bascule Chambers, which house the enormous 422-ton counterweights that power the mighty Bridge Lifts.

This tour is for adults only and includes difficult-to-access areas for people with disabilities, e.g. the bascule chamber. Owing to health and safety, only 12 places on this tour.

This is one of two tours on this afternoon. Please only book for one not both!

Thanks to the exceptional generosity of Bridge House Estates we offer this tour at well under half the normal price to the public. Therefore, STRICTLY LONDON HISTORIANS MEMBERS ONLY.
