About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

This informal workshop will be run by a speech and language therapist and a specialist teacher. A Sylheti-speaking youth worker will join us and can provide interpreting support.

We will focus on:

  • Understanding what life is like for teenagers with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), previously known as Specific Language Impairment (SLI)
  • Sharing experiences of parenting teenagers with DLD
  • Developing your confidence in supporting your teenager with DLD.

Our group will take place at Spotlight youth centre for children and young people aged 11-19 (up to 25 for those with SEND). While you are there the youth workers can give you a tour of the facilities and explain what Spotlight offers.

Please note: this is a 4-part course. You will need to attend all 4 sessions:

  • Wednesday 19 June 2024
  • Wednesday 26 June 2024
  • Thursday 4 July 2024
  • Wednesday 10 July 2024

All sessions are at 11am - 12.30pm

This is a collaboration between Barts Health NHS Trust, Tower Hamlets Learning Advisory Service, and Spotlight youth service.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my child has DLD?

Speech and language therapists diagnose Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). You should have a copy of the report. If you cannot find it, try asking your child's school or GP. If your child was diagnosed a long time ago the therapist might have called it Specific Language Impairment (SLI).

Will there be an interpreter?

We will have a Sylheti-speaking interpreter. If you need a BSL interpreter please email sltconsultation.bartshealth@nhs.net. If you need support in another language, you are welcome to bring someone with you.

I am a professional wanting to learn more about DLD for my work. May I attend this course?

No, this course is only for family members. If you want to learn more about DLD in a professional capacity, please email sltconsultation.bartshealth@nhs.net and we will try to help.

My child is still at primary school. Can I come to this group?

If your child is in Year 6 - yes, you'll be very welcome. If your child is younger, please look out for one of our courses for parents of younger children with DLD. This course is for parents of children and young people aged 11-19 years.

I think my child has DLD but they have not been given a diagnosis. What should I do?

Speech and language therapists diagnose DLD. If you would like your child assessed please speak to the school's SENDCO in the first instance. If you are still worried you can email sltconsultation.bartshealth@nhs.net to arrange a conversation with a speech and language therapist.

Can I join online?

This course is face-to-face for parents of local children and young people. If you cannot attend in person please contact the course provider to let us know - we may be able to run an online course in the future.

Can I bring my child along?

This course is only for parents and caregivers. We do not have creche facilities.

We don't live in Tower Hamlets. Can I still come?

This course is intended for families in Tower Hamlets and the City of London. If you live somewhere else please contact the course provider - if we have spaces available we will accommodate you. Even better, contact your local services to find out what they can offer you.
