Trade and Climate: How Brexit trade deals threaten the UK’s net-zero target

Wednesday 4 September, 4-5.30pm
Room A, 1 Parliament Street

With

  • Craig Bennett, CEO, Friends of the Earth UK

  • Dr Kamala Dawar, University of Sussex

  • Ruth Bergan, the Trade Justice Movement

  • Chaired by Faisal Rashid MP

Trade and climate change are two issues at the forefront of current political debate.

In one of her last acts as Prime Minister, Theresa May pledged that the UK would achieve ‘net zero’ emissions by 2050, in a bid to demonstrate the UK’s global leadership on climate change. At the same time, the Government is pursuing post-Brexit trade agreements with new partners, including the USA, Australia and the Trans-Pacific region.

In this panel discussion with representatives from politics, academia and civil society, we will explore the ways in which trade affects the environment, and whether the UK’s net-zero target is compatible with post-Brexit trade policy. Each of the panelists has worked at the forefront of research and activism around trade and climate change, a relationship which - despite the importance of both topics - remains underexplored.
