Event Details

The Historical Association is delighted to be working in partnership with the University of Exeter to provide a FREE teacher training day covering aspects of Viking, Anglo-Saxon and Norman history. If you are teaching the Vikings, Anglo-Saxons or Normans at GCSE or A-level then this event is for you.

An outline programme is available below. Booking is available to all and you do not have to be a member of the HA to take part.


Programme

09.30-10.00 Registration and coffee

10.00-11.00 Myths and realities: when, why and how were images of the Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans created? (Professor Sarah Hamilton, University of Exeter)

11.00-11.20 Coffee break

11.20-12.20 Session 1: Choice from 4 concurrent teacher workshops:

Workshop A: Vikings (Neal Watkins)
Workshop B: Tour of Viking York (Chris Culpin)
Workshop C: Interpretations of the Norman Conquest (Sally Burnham)
Workshop D: Emma of Normandy/Cnut (Abdul Mohamud and Robin Whitburn)

12.25-13.20 Conquest and Settlement: England 792-1086 (Dr Alice Hicklin, Freie University, Berlin and Dr Sarah Greer, University of St Andrews)

13.20-14.00 Lunch

14.00-14.45 Conquest and Government: England c.900-c.1086 (focus on power, lawmaking and church reform) (Professor Simon MacLean, University of St Andrews)

14.45-15.15 Tea break

15.15-16.15 Session 2: Choice from 5 concurrent teacher workshops:

How do I select the workshops I want to attend?

A workshop selection form will be sent to all attendees ahead of the event.


Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, all we need is your name. If someone booked on your behalf, please make sure they change the ticket to include your details.


Is lunch provided?

A sandwich lunch and tea/coffee will be provided. Please let us know if you have any dietary or access requirements as soon as possible using the contact details above.
