About this event
Using traditional Chinese lacquer (大漆) in a contemporary way, this workshop invites you to explore an experimental technique of dripping lacquer onto water, forming delicate patterns, and transferring them onto paper or fans. The process is playful, meditative, and visually stunning — no prior experience is needed, just your curiosity and creativity.
The session will begin with a brief introduction to the history of Chinese lacquer, its cultural significance, and a variety of traditional techniques. You’ll also have the chance to see and touch original works by the instructor, featuring traditional techniques such as inlay, carving, and polishing — beyond the floating lacquer explored in this session.
Whether you’re interested in materials, craft, or simply looking for a mindful and artistic afternoon, this is a rare chance to experience the beauty of Chinese lacquer up close — and take home your very own “floating lacquer” creation.
The workshop will be held at Proposition Bethnal Green, an inviting space perfect for relaxing and making.
To keep things relaxed and personal, we’re keeping the group small — just 6 to 8 participants.
Approximate Timings:
• 2:30pm – Gather
• 2:40–3:00pm – Brief introduction to Chinese lacquer
• 3:00–4:15pm – Hands-on practice

All materials are lovingly prepared for you — just bring yourself and your creativity!
What is Chinese Lacquer?
Chinese lacquer is a natural material derived from the sap of the lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum). For thousands of years, it has been used in China as a durable, protective, and decorative coating for furniture, musical instruments, and artworks.
Each historical period developed its own distinctive lacquer styles and techniques, making lacquer art a rich and evolving tradition that continues to inspire contemporary artists today
About the Workshop Leader:
This workshop will be led by Luyin Cao (@luyincao), a lacquer artist specializing in traditional Chinese lacquer techniques. Based in China and London, Luyin holds degrees from the China Academy of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art. Her work combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary creativity, focusing on themes of nature, feminism, and labor. Don’t miss the chance to learn directly from an expert in the field!
⚠️ Allergy Awareness
Chinese lacquer contains urushiol, a natural substance that may cause allergic reactions through direct skin contact. Gloves will be provided during the workshop to minimize exposure.
Participants with known sensitivities — especially those allergic to mango (which also contains urushiol) — should exercise caution.
Please note: Once fully dried and cured, lacquer is completely safe to touch — smooth, durable, and even food-safe.
Turpentine Usage: A small amount of turpentine (Winsor & Newton brand) will be used during the workshop. Please let us know in advance if you are sensitive to its scent.
What to Wear:
Floating lacquer can get a bit messy — while it rarely stains clothes, sleeves and cuffs are most at risk, and dried lacquer is very difficult to remove.
We recommend wearing old clothes and shoes so you can create freely!
Accessibility & Transport Info:
The venue is located on the 4th floor with no lift, and is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.
There is a bike rack outside the building, and parking is available on-site.
