About this event

Master the art of making fire by friction, like our ancestors!  We’ll guide you on wood selection and you’ll learn how to make your very own bow drill kit.  With expert guidance and plenty of time to practice, you’ll then have the joy of producing an ember, using the bow drill technique (also known as Indian Fiddle).  Our instructors will then guide you on nurturing the ember into a living fire, teach you how to keep your fire going and how transport it.

You can then take home your bow drill kit, to make fire the traditional way, time and time again.

The course is held in beautiful South Wales, in our woodland within the Brecon Beacons.  We lay on all the campfire tea and coffee you can drink and provide snacks.  Please bring your own lunch (which you are welcome to cook over the fire) and some sturdy shoes.

Experience includes:

  • Learn flint & steel, bow drill and ‘strike-a-light’ methods
  • Your bow drill kit to take home
  • All the tools and materials you'll need
  • Tea and coffee all day - bring your own lunch
  • Leave with the skills and materials to be able to practice fire lighting on your own

Axe & Paddle Bushcraft began back in 2012, when husband and wife team Steven and Kirsty Le Say hosted a Spoon Carving Workshop in a friend’s garden.

We’ve just relocated and opened up our own studio, on an 8 acre smallholding in the Brecon Beacons National Park - where we now host a number of courses, teaching traditional skills and crafts. We also have Shepherds Hut accommodation and camping available.
