Event description

Description

John Hutchinson and Andy Mitchell, sports historians

The Football Club is the world’s first known organisation dedicated to football. Founded by John Hope in Edinburgh in 1824, it remained active until 1841 and Hope’s meticulous records of the club are preserved among his personal papers in National Records of Scotland. This talk will shed light on the extensive club membership, how they interlinked through sport and work, where they lived, where they were educated, and what their position was in society. It will also introduce some startling links between the members of the Foot-Ball Club and the next generation of footballers.
