About this event

What: we'll be back on the lower half of the Pie Run continuing work on some reroutes to the trail line plus maintenance on the existing trail. Details below.

Who: all welcome, no previous trailbuilding experience needed.

  • U14's need to be accompanied at sessions by a parent/guardian.

  • 14 - 17 yr olds need a parent/guardian to come to the meet up, sign the sign on sheet and collect at the end of the session. Parents/guardians very welcome to sign up and help dig too.

Sign up: we've got 16 spaces available for this session. Remember to get a ticket for each person in your party who'll be coming along.

What to bring: suitable clothes for trailwork outside in autumn (including waterproofs), sturdy boots, own trail snacks/drinks

We provide: tools, gloves, hi vis, safety glasses, session supervision/guidance/ training.

Meet up: 0900 at the Gateway building at Glentress, under the canopy next to the toilets/changing/showers.

Directions for parking/meet up: turn into Glentress off A72. Once past the barrier head straight on and after ~150m and bear right over the concrete bridge (now single lane for vehicles), following the blue badge holders parking signs, head briefly up the hill then right again just before the Gateway building into the car park.

Getting to the worksite: from the meet up we'll drive steadily up into the forest (on good quality forest roads) and park at the junction by the exit of the Pie Run. Carsharing where possible.

Trail closure required? Yes, the Pie Run will be closed whilst we work on it between ~0915 and ~1245.

Tasks on the trails:

  • complete digging out new RH turn to link leg 1 to leg 2 of the trail just before the rooty uphill on leg 1 then start surfacing with aggregate where required in and around roots. Remove redundant pipe in existing trail and infill with quality mineral soils, compact.

  • dig new RH catch turn where new trail exits onto leg 2. Strip off organic layers, dig trench and sump, install 150 dia pipe and cover with mineral soils. Form berm from good quality mineral soils. Surface with imported aggregate if required

  • finish surfacing the short reroute part way down leg 3 infilling between roots with aggregate, shaping then compacting to form durable well draining riding surface.

  • resurface in/around pronounced root at RH bend lower down on leg 3, add shape and support

  • cleaning out drainage channels/deberming and draining puddles along trail

Cake break: 1100 ish!

Finishing up: we'll finish up on the trail at ~1245, back down to the Gateway building for 1300.

Parking and the exit barrier: we'll give you a code at the meet up giving you free parking for the full day (the least we can do!). Just before leaving Glentress find the nearest paystation and input your vehicle registration and the code. The barrier will then lift automatically on exiting.

We're chuffed to be continuing work on the Pie Run and looking forward to completing more of the little updates to this classic section.

Cheers,
