Specialist Safeguarding Consultant, Andrew Hall explains how his ‘Leading Inspirational Safeguarding Learning’ helps schools develop outstanding safeguarding to keep all children and young people safe from harm.

Those of you have heard me speak will know that I am totally against the word 'training', but instead prefer to use the phrase Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Until now, I've continued to use 'training' because everyone else does and it's a kind of shorthand that people understand. Since September I've made the switch more seriously than ever before and I'm trying to encourage others to do so too.

For me, the key difference between training and CPD is that training is specific, skill-focused and task-related; it's one reason MacDonalds is consisently the same across the world. Continuing Professional Development, on the other hand, is just that, ongoing, relies on professional judgement and evolves over time.

Learning about safeguarding is a process and it is never finished. However long you've been involved, there is always something new to learn, another viewpoint to take. This has never been more important than today.

Over the last few years developing my work as a specialist safeguarding consultant and speaker, I've realised that the quality of the learner's experience is not driven by the content alone. After a CPD event, there has to be an action, something has to change.

I've now developed a train the trainer package that is more than just a 'train the trainer' package.

This CPD programme is for anyone who has a role in helping others understand safeguarding and child protection, but the programme will be less about the practitioner's knowledge, and more about how they understand how to engage and communicate.

I'm pleased to introduce the 'Leading Inspirational Safeguarding CPD'. This is a course of two days, separated by a couple of months, with study work to complete in between. The days are practical and places are limited so that we can work more dynamically.

By the end of the course you will

  • How understanding your 'why' helps you share your passion
  • How consistent visuals promote effective learning
  • How to tell real-life stories so your audience understand
  • How seeing the bigger picture helps you focus on the journey
  • How sharing actions makes change more likely

Attendees will:

  • develop a specialist area of knowledge to share with others
  • have an opportunity to be heard speaking
  • create a programme of learning and development for your own setting

Continuing Professional Development events should always move someone along their knowledge journey, so they, know something they didn't know before, see something they hadn't seen before, and, importantly, motivate them to take action.

"After the Leading Inspirational CPD course, I had a 'Safeguarding Reminders' slot on the next training day so I got to try some of the techniques. It went so well. I also received a round of applause at the end of one session, and lots of positive feedback. So it was definitely a bit of a buzz. My Headteacher was very complimentary - he hates power points and boring training so he said it was a refreshing approach."

Catherine, DSL, Middlesex

To keep this generation safe, and by extension the children of the next generation, this course will help today's CPD speakers lead inspiring safeguarding learning and development.

The two full days of learning will take place in central London on:

Friday 17th May 2019 and
Thursday 4th July 2019

(It is expected that everyone will attend both dates*)

Between the two days, there will be a least one coaching call.

Additional resources include a private online group for people to share, support and ask questions of each other and me.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this course qualify me to deliver Level 2 training or Level 3 training?

Short answer - yes!

Since Working Together was revised and republished in 2013, the national levels for the content of child protection training were removed. Keeping Children Safe in Education (2018) says, ‘All staff members should receive appropriate safeguarding and child protection training which is regularly updated.' It is up to schools to ensure that staff have appropriate training'; and Ofsted will check it is effective.

This course will enable colleagues to develop their understanding of how to lead inspirational CPD, build content and assess impact.

Why is the cost of this course more than your usual Advanced Safeguarding for DSLs?

This course is more expensive because it is a two-day course. The cost you see on our Eventbrite page is for both days and also shows the VAT inclusive price, which most schools can recoup. Between the two there are opportunities to keep in contact with myself and other colleagues; and at least one online meeting.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes!

Will this course be good for me, I'm a......

This course will be great for you if you want to lead inspirational safeguarding CPD. So, whether you are a DSL in a school, lead safeguarding across a MAT, or you are an independent consultant, this will help you communicate the learning better, have more impact and build a long term legacy for safeguarding more children and young people in your setting.

I've been a teacher and trainer for many years, what will I learn?

I've been a teacher myself for (cough...more than) 30 years, led staff meetings and trained people for much of that time! When I became a trainer after leaving full-time headship, I wanted to be the best I could be and I've continued learning how to lead and inspire in my work. I've spent time and money on courses and mentors, so that my message gets shared as effectively as possible.

There's always more to learn! If you're open to being better and accepting that none of us know everything. you'll find valuable learning in this course.

I've never been on one of your courses, how do I know you're any good?

Fair question. If you're worried about this, it might be best to start with another of my courses first. It's not important that you've heard me speak before, but already understanding my philosophy and values is useful.

Will there be another Train the Trainer Course after this one?

Probably, but not until the next academic year.

How much is it?

The total cost is £997+vat for both days, online meeting, resources and a private messaging group for support and questions.
